Trish and I chill out in Toul for a few days. Time for a rest and recuperate, along with sightseeing and domestics.. which, as usual on a boat, seem to take up much of the day (especially when its transporting fuel in 20l cans on a bicycle).
For me, Toul is noticeable for two things, its magnificent cathedral and the Vaubin fortified walls, which are largely intact, although updated later by......
We saw the Cathedral as we came down the Moselle, completely dominating the skyline, and sitting majestically above red roofed houses.
It was a "must" visit. The "Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Toul".... Magnificent, at least from the outside ... a wonderful facade, and some beautiful cloisters.. apparently the largest in France, and currently being renovated.
In side it was not so startling, though the renovations of the ceilings were fun, and the "reliquary" with several blindfolded skulls puzzling. Still haven't managed to find out quite what the significance was.
I rather liked the peaceful spaces and simple altars created in some areas, splendid with the light falling through the stained glass windows.
Of course we had plenty of time for dog training... down stays in front of french bars being a thing we thought needed some practice... hard work this dog training...
